We were approached to develop the design for a new clubhouse for a coastal rowing club at Fisherrow, Musselburgh.
The proposed building is to house a workshop for boat repair together with ancillary accommodation. The building was also to serve as a flexible space that could be used by other harbour stakeholders.
The form and materiality of the building was informed by its context. We chose a robust brick finish for the ground floor to provide security. The upper floor is lighter and will be clad in complementary timber, with a large glazed element acting as a viewing gallery and providing a beacon for those out at sea.
Beyond the lighthouse analogy, we see a real opportunity to develop a beacon building that will act as a catalyst for the wider regeneration of the harbour area.
